“Día de los Niños – Day of the Children”

The West Valley School District celebrated “Día de los Niños – Day of the Children” at Wide Hollow on April 30, 2024. Various activities were organized in the gym after school for children of all ages.

The highlight of the day was an appearance by West Valley parent, Román Torres. Román is a former player for the Seattle Sounders and the national team for Panamá. In addition, Román wrote a children’s book with author Temi Díaz.

Román’s book emphasizes the importance of determination and discipline. In the book, Román explains that he wasn’t the best soccer player in his neighborhood but he was able to succeed because he listened to his father -- “His Dad, a fisherman, a hard-working man, knew that discipline was built with effort and believing you can.”

A highlight of Román’s career was scoring the winning goal for Panamá’s national team in the 2018 World Cup qualifying game against Costa Rica. A video clip of his goal from the 87th minute can be viewed via this link: CLICK HERE

The West Valley School District is grateful for parent engagement and for the time that West Valley parent Román Torres volunteered, this year, to make the 2024 “Día de los Niños” a special event.
